Beyond the Candy Corn: How to Protect Your Teeth This Halloween
With the arrival of October comes all the sugary treats of Halloween, which can destroy your teeth if you aren’t careful. We provide some practical ways to prevent future tooth decay after feasting on sweets here.

Even if you don’t consider Halloween a frightening holiday, your teeth certainly do.

Suppose you love stocking up on all your favorite sugary treats during this beloved fall-time holiday. In that case, it’s critical to take some precautions to protect your teeth so you don’t wind up with significant oral health issues soon after the spooky season.

Our team, led by Nodesh Shyamsunder, BDS, and Jasleen Raina, DDS, at Beaches Dentistry in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, is passionate about empowering you to practice good oral hygiene year-round, and especially during the sugar-packed Halloween period.

So, in this month’s blog, we’re discussing some proactive ways you can protect your teeth and gums.

How does sugar affect your teeth?

Before we dive into some practical oral health habits, it’s helpful to understand just how much sugar and candy can damage your teeth.

Your mouth is full of bacteria. Good bacteria break down food as you chew it, but bad bacteria turn sugar into acid. The more sugar you consume, the more acid accumulates in your mouth.

If acid is left unattended, it can erode the enamel on your teeth, leading to cavities and tooth decay.

What are the worst candies for your teeth?

Not all sugar and candy have the same damaging effects on your teeth. Even though there aren’t any sugar-packed foods that are good for your teeth, there are certainly some that have the potential to do severe damage quickly.

These include:

Sticky candy

Candy that’s particularly sticky or chewy can get stuck in your teeth and be difficult to brush away. The longer the candy is in your mouth, the more likely it is to erode your tooth enamel.

Hard candy

As you suck on lollipops and other hard candies, you have to keep them in your mouth for a period, making it likely that tooth-eroding acid develops. You can also chip or crack teeth when biting down on hard candies.

Sour candy

Sour candies coated in citric acid can erode your teeth quickly. In addition, sour gummies are typically coated in sugar, which can develop another potential cavity.

Take steps to protect your oral health

As you head into the Halloween season, keep these healthy habits in mind to protect your teeth from the sugary sweets:

  • Don’t keep candy in your mouth for too long
  • Don’t crunch on hard candies
  • Rinse your mouth with water immediately after eating candy
  • Chew sugarless gum for 20 minutes after eating candy to neutralize acid
  • Brush and floss your teeth 30 minutes after eating candy

Scheduling a dental cleaning with our Beaches Dentistry team ensures that we remove plaque and other debris that you can’t remove yourself, adding another layer of protection to your oral health.

You can schedule a professional cleaning by calling our office or using our online booking feature today.

What our patients are saying
Dr. Raina has been an outstanding orthodontist for me! I needed upper and lower braces as an adult and she made the entire process a fantastic experience! The entire office staff is so kind, patient, and personable! Another plus is having my dentist, Dr. Nodesh, in the same office so cleanings and routine dental checkups could overlap on the same day as orthodontic appointments.
